Community Support Services (CSS)

The Sr. Grant Writer serves as the primary grant writer for Community Support Services. Responsible for researching, identifying and securing government and foundation funding to support the mission and vision of CSS.  Manages the research and content development of all funding applications to government, foundation, and other funders.

What a Sr. Grant Writer does...

  • Participate in agency decision-making, program planning, policy development and administration oversight, especially resource development decisions.
  • Research, identify, and secure government and foundation funding to support the mission and vision of CSS.
  • Participate in collaborative decision making with CSS executive leadership to respond to RFPs to secure funding for CSS programs and issue areas, ensuring a balance of win likelihood, pipeline of work, and ROI.
  • Research and monitor trends in philanthropic giving, collective impact, and government funding arenas.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen CSS’ overall collective impact potential through new processes and resources opportunities.
  • Identify and develop strategies to optimize the grants administration process.
  • Advise organizational leadership on positioning and activities.
  • Lead grant proposal development/submission and monitor grant applications, ensuring every submitted proposal represents the YMCA well.
  • Perform research and data collection and maintain and update grant support documents.
  • Draft proposals and grant application narratives, and collaborate to finalize with organizational leadership.
  • Execute thank you letters and ensure acknowledgment of funders.
  • Identify, establish and maintain critical relationships with funders and foundations.
  • Occasional in-state and out-of-state travel required.
  • Assist with fundraising.

What we look for in a Sr. Grant Writer...

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or a related field is required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience required.
  • Demonstrated success in securing large scale (>$300k+) government grants required.  Success in securing foundation and corporate grants preferred.
  • Analytical and persuasive writing and superior editing skills required.
  • Ability to convey complex information in a clear manner.
  • Previous experience supervising staff preferred.
  • Excellent project management skills with experience in managing and supervising administrative projects with strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a very diverse setting with people of all backgrounds, culture and orientation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication, and presentation skills.
  • Must be detailed oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with funders and foundations.
  • Requires strong computer knowledge and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work with confidential information.
  • Ability to work within various deadlines and respond to multiple demands.
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel throughout San Diego County.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Visual and auditory ability to observe critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute.
