Asphalt Plant Operator

This position will be responsible for manufacturing various asphalt products according to mix design and customer jobsite specifications. Performs pre and post shift inspections and reports condition of plant for items needing repair. Operates controls to batch material. Reads and/or writes delivery tickets to determine mix design called for each load. Performs calculations for differing load sizes. Loads Hot Mix Asphalt into haul trucks. May issue delivery tickets to haul truck driver. May operates loader to supply material to the plant. Communicates with Dispatchers and Drivers. Controls inventory of materials (i.e. oil, fuel, lime, etc.).
This individual will also be responsible for maintaining stationary HMA equipment including but not limited to conveyors, shakers, drives, and screws. This includes inspecting the condition of the machinery and documenting items in need of repair or service; diagnosing problems and performing mechanical repair and maintenance; replacing or repairing defective parts using hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, and welding equipment; rebuilding or fabricating parts; reading technical manuals: and may order parts from central services or outside suppliers/vendors. May drive a pick-up truck or maintenance vehicle in the plant and/or to pick-up parts from local vendors. Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
High School diploma or its equivalent is required. Must possess a minimum of three years repair/maintenance experience at an asphalt plant. Previous experience in operating various types of heavy mobile equipment is preferred but not required. Requires solid knowledge and understanding of proper operation and capabilities of the equipment. Must be able to recognize various products by sight and to understand proper plant operation. Previous experience operating an asphalt plant desired. Good mechanical repair, accurate math skills and communication skills are required. Previous computer experience is preferred. Must be able to work with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
A valid driver's license is required. Must be able to cut, weld and fabricate; lift plant components up to 50 pounds; work at heights of up to 100-feet and move in a variety of body positions; possess the ability to diagnose sources of trouble and use various hand tools, power tools, and machinery such as grinders, presses, cranes, and jacks to complete repairs; possess basic computer skills and have the ability to read technical manuals and understand schematic diagrams; be safety conscious and respond to inquiries promptly and follow through to ensure the situation is taken care of correctly; possess strong hazard recognition skills; have knowledge and understanding of OSHA and MSHA rules and regulations; perform tasks in a safe and efficient manner. Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are required. Must have personal hand tools up to 1 Â½" in size. Basic math i.e. the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and find percentages are required. Must have the ability to think logically and problem solve. Must possess good perceptual skills used in judging distances, motor skills to operate the plant controls, ability recognizing plant related symptoms of problems, and in recognizing dangers to operate the plant in a safe manner. Must have the ability to make sound judgments in order to prevent accidents. Good mechanical repair, accurate math skills and concise communication skills are required. Must be computer literate. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces. Must be dependable, conscientiousness, and have the ability to pay close attention to detail, and the ability to read and understand instructions. Must have the ability to work varying schedules to support customer needs.
