BASIC FUNCTION:
 
Under the direction of the Director of Information Technology; perform a variety of technical and resource services in support of the installation, administration, operation, repair and diagnosis of computer networks; install a variety of hardware and software packages in various configurations; provide technical support assistance to assigned sites.


 Examples of Duties:
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
 
Perform a variety of technical and resource services in support of the installation, administration, operation, repair and diagnosis of computer networks; configure, update and maintain multi-platform network systems both physical and virtual in a storage area network; install, configure and maintain file, print, e-mail, web and multi-platform servers. E
 
Maintain integrity of the network; install a variety of hardware and software packages in various configurations; install security tools; configure switches; install backup hardware and software to ensure system longevity and successful data backups; install and administer anti-viral software on workstations and servers. E
 
Provide technical support assistance and act as an escalation point to assigned sites; coordinate, lead and train computer support personnel in the maintenance of network applications and related problems; explain proper setup and configuration of workstations and network settings as assigned. E
 
Troubleshoot network problems involving routing, communications, operating systems, printing, and other applications. E
 
Apply system and application patches and upgrades on a regular basis and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. E
 
Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to network changes, additions, repairs and assigned activities. E
 
Communicate with District personnel and outside vendors to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns. E
 
Operate a variety of equipment including network analyzers, cable testers, telephones, computers and a variety of hardware tools. E
 
Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field. E
 
Assist in the design of technologies, configurations and/or enhancements to existing systems.
 
Perform related duties as assigned.

 Typical Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
 
Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities to perform the typical duties equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by college-level course work in computer hardware or software applications and three years of related experience working with server hardware and software in a network environment.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
 
Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate: Windows Server 2008 or newer.  A bachelor's degree in Information Systems or a related field may be considered in lieu of a MCSA certificate.
 
Novell Certified Linux Professional 10 or 11 (NCLP 10 or NCLP 11) is highly desirable, but not required.
 
Experience with Apple products and technologies, Google Chrome and technologies is highly desirable, but not required.
 
Knowledge of Storage Area Networks is desirable.
 
Valid California driver's license.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
 
The Systems Administrator performs a variety of technical and resource services in the support of the installation, administration, operation, repair and diagnosis of computer networks.  The Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, implementation and maintenance of complex network systems.
