We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced results-oriented and hardware-focused Air Vehicle Conceptual Design Engineer to conceive and develop new remotely operated air vehicles. The individual chosen for this role will perform air vehicle conceptual design activities, including development of corresponding tools and technologies.

With limited direction, this position exercises considerable latitude for initiating and developing designs, procedures, techniques and solutions to resolving advanced technical engineering problems. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of broad specifications, objectives, possible results anticipated, and critical reference points requiring special attention. Guides the successful resolution of engineering problems, serves as a consulting resource of engineering knowledge, applies the latest technological advancements to the problem, and may function in a project leadership role. Documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff, makes technical presentations, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on projects. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.

  • Develop new air vehicle concept designs and modifications to existing air vehicles (fixed, VTOL, and rotary wing). Develop analysis tools and perform mathematical modeling of air vehicles. Identify and evaluate technologies that will enable marketable new vehicles.
  • Responsibilities will include conceptual air vehicle design, vehicle configuration layout, aircraft sizing, aircraft performance analysis, propulsion integration, multi-disciplinary design optimization, trade study execution, sensitivity analysis, simulation, and briefing senior management on results obtained. Responsibilities may include technology development, mission analysis / planning, CONOPS preparation, mathematical modeling, project planning, and documentation of results.
  • Ability to lead projects of moderate to high complexity.
  • Position requires strong analytical and communication skills (written & oral), a broad knowledge of aeronautical sciences and the ability to work closely with a wide variety of design groups including but not limited to Aerodynamics, Structures, Propulsion, Weights, Flight Controls, Power Electronics, Software, and Flight Test.
  • Candidate must be competent with Matlab, MS office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and have excellent technical writing skills.
  • Familiarity with Matlab and CREO or similar CAD/lofting software is required. Expert user of Matlab and experience with air vehicle design/analysis (RDSWin, AAA, DATCOM), multi-disciplinary design optimization (Matlab Optimization toolbox, modeFrontier, Model Center, iSight), CFD (XFOIL, XROTOR, AVL, VLAERO, SU2, Acusolve, FLUENT), CSD (ASWing/ZAERO), rotorcraft or multi-body analysis (NDARC, HELIOS/CAMRAD II/RCAS/ / MBDyn), ANSYS suite, AFSIM or other simulation, MS Project, Simulink software and an additional structured programming language (Java, FORTRAN, C++, Python) is desirable.
  • Familiarity with composite aircraft structure design is preferred. Knowledge of aircraft engine technology and systems, including internal combustion, turbofan, turboprop, turbojet and hybrid engines is desired.
  • Experience with aircraft home-building or model aircraft and Private pilot’s license or flight training is desired.
  • Must be U.S. Citizen.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security clearance

Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, seven or more years of experience with a master’s degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required enabling an effective interface with other departments and/or professionals, and capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact, as well as providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
  • Customer focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.
  • Experience with Integration and test of mission systems, sensors, and payloads onto large and small, manned and unmanned, fixed wing, and rotary wing platform is preferred.
  • Experience working with program capture and proposal generation experience is desired.
  • Experienced with cost estimates, task scheduling and resource planning to meet budget allotment.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
  • Professional Engineering License, original work(s) published in professional engineering journals, and invited to present one or more original works to an engineering symposium are desirable.
