SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Senior Veterinarian, is responsible for the examination and medical treatment of animals under the care and custody of the society.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following but not limited to: Workweek will include weekends, on-call services and special events as required.

Responsible for the medical examination, medical care and monitoring of the health and welfare of animals in the care of the society as well as animals from contract agencies.
Spay and neuter surgeries are preformed daily and additional soft tissue and orthopedic surgery as necessary.
Under the supervision of the Senior Veterinarian prepare documentation and provide expertise to investigation department on-site, in field and in court.
Maintain medical charts and records for animals including protective custody animals, complete with medical summary, necropsy reports and any treatment data.
Data entry into animal database software.
Active participation in local veterinary associations is required.
Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management and the public at all times. Must work professionally under pressure.

Skills / Requirements

EDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE : DVM/VMD degree from accredited university, license in state of CA. Three years experience in the field of veterinary medicine, with experience with high volume surgeries preferred. Prefer experience with herd health and/or large populations of animals. Excellent oral and written communications skills are required. Valid CA Drivers License required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Individual will have extended periods of 4 to 6 hours of standing, stretching and bending. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Standard office, animal care, public, and surgical environment, with exposure to hazardous chemicals, anesthetics and sharp objects. There is potential of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals.
