Jobing Description

SUMMARY Under the direction of the Animal Training Coordinator educates customers about dog behavior and care, helping enhance the bond between dog and owner and allow responsible pet owners to safely and humanely control their dog‚s behavior.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
 Primary responsibility will entail leading group training classes for public and in house animals, offered through SDHS&SPCA.
 Assist in the creation of educational handouts and other materials such as new written materials for classes as needed.
 Return Behavior Helpline calls and Ask A Trainer emails from adopters with the assistance of volunteers.
 Assist Internal Trainers in the implementation of in-house shelter animal training programs using positive reinforcement training methods.
 Accurately and reliably keep training records and working files as assigned. Provide education to the public, including programs, pre-adoption behavior consultations and post-adoption training sessions.
 Collect and enter data to assist the department in creation of monthly reports and statistics.
 Communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers, management, volunteers and the public at all times.
Contribute to a work environment that fosters pride in being part of a winning team that promotes personal growth.
 Other duties as assigned.

Skills / Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE: High school diploma required. Prefer college degree or equivalent. Must have a positive approach and rapport with animals and people. Minimum three years of training experience and consumer contact experience teaching independently group training classes is preferred. CPDT certification or equivalent preferred. Knowledge of both canine and feline behavior is required. Experience in the use of positive reinforcement methods, including appropriate use of humane training products is required. Clicker training experience is required. Previous shelter work experience is highly desirable. Requires well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people of varying background and cultures by adapting style and tactics to fit the audience. Must be comfortable speaking with members of the public, in front of groups, over the telephone, and communicating via email. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required. Individual must be flexible, work well under pressure, be an active problem-solver, and possess a positive attitude. Must be able to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of euthanasia.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Individual will frequently be required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear. May need to lift and/or manipulate animals weighing up to 100 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT A blend of both indoor and outdoor shelter kennels, standard office environment, indoor classrooms and outdoor training yards. When outdoors, may be exposed to weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and direct sunlight. Will be working directly with animals, staff, volunteers and the public. This position will be based out of our Gaines Street campus in Linda Vista. Travel to our Sherman Street location and North campus in Oceanside will be required on a variable schedule. Work hours will also include weekend and evening time.
