General Summary
The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for performing a variety of professional-level structural engineering tasks including field surveys, analysis, design, drawing reviews, drawing, calculation and report preparation, as well as fundamental project management tasks, as directed by senior technical staff. The Senior Project Engineer administratively reports to the Regional Manager, or a Group Manager assigned by the Regional Manager. The Senior Project Engineer may act independently as the engineer in responsible charge for smaller projects and for portions of larger or complex projects. The Senior Project Engineer may assume project management responsibility for smaller projects, or for identifiable subtasks of larger or complex projects. When not assuming project management responsibility, the Senior Project Engineer will take technical direction on a project and assignment specific basis from a supervisor assigned by the Regional Manager or Group Manager. This supervisor will normally be a Project Manager, Principal Engineer or Group Manager. The Senior Project Engineer may be assigned to several projects concurrently, and on each project assignment may report for technical direction to a different supervisor. The Senior Project Engineer position is a professional-level technical position, with limited responsibility for performing management tasks. Tasks are typically performed on an independent basis, though subject to independent quality assurance audits. Technical supervision and assistance is provided on an as-needed basis.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (PDR)
The Senior Project Engineer is a professional-level position, with primary technical responsibility and limited management responsibility. The Senior Project Engineer position is typically filled by a civil or structural engineer who has attained professional engineering registration and has several years of responsible charge level experience. The PDRs for this position are intended to permit the Senior Project Engineer to continue to develop technical and management skills in preparation for advancement either to Principal Engineer or Project Manager responsibility, while advancing the company s project responsibilities. PDR s include:
1. Develop budgets and schedules for assigned projects and project tasks, within requirements of contracts and subject to the approval of Project and Regional Management.
2. Initiate project set up and project management files for projects or sub-projects of moderate complexity.
3. Act in responsible charge, while directly performing assigned structural engineering tasks in conformance with the company s quality standards and the project budget and schedule.
4. Provide direction and oversight of Engineers, Lead Engineers and Project Engineers assigned to assist the Senior Project Engineer in execution of project responsibilities.
5. Initiate and maintain communication with clients and contractors for purposes of technical coordination of project requirements.
6. Participate in marketing of the company s and services to client contacts and to new clients as assigned by Regional Management.
7. Assist in collection of payment for project work from clients, as assigned by Project and Regional Management.
8. Prepare and submit time charge records, expense reports, invoice approvals, and collections status notices in a timely manner in accordance with company procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required (KSAR)
The following list is generally applicable to all Project Engineers.
1. Master of Science degree in civil or structural engineering (or recognized equivalent) and at least 5 years work experience in structural design, evaluation and/or construction of complex steel or concrete structures; or a Doctor of Philosophy degree in civil or structural engineering (or recognized equivalent) and 4 years of work experience in structural design, evaluation and/or construction of complex steel or concrete structures.
2. Professional engineering registration.
3. Ability to speak and write English, fluently.
4. Ability to utilize basic personal computer applications including spread sheets, word processors, email, and internet browsers, as well as technically specialized applications such as linear or nonlinear structural finite-element programs.
5. Ability to communicate technical aspects of projects and of work assignments to peers, subordinates and clients.
6. Ability to direct the execution of moderately complex structural engineering tasks including design, evaluation, and document preparation.
7. Working knowledge of ABS Consulting Quality and Environmental Management Systems and on understanding of and appreciation for the concepts of Continuous Improvement and process thinking.

Working Conditions
Work will normally be performed in an air-conditioned office environment, although some work will be performed in the field under potentially difficult working conditions. Work will generally be non-manual in nature.
Reporting Relationships
Reports directly to Project Manager for technical matters and to Group Manager or Regional Manager for administrative matters.
