Working closely with a Buyer, the Assistant Buyer will perform a variety of basic functions supporting the buying office and Ecommerce while contributing to the long term strategic business objectives within the area of responsibility. The Assistant Buyer will assist with product selection and directives, negotiations, basic assortment planning, vendor communication, inventory management and marketing of specific lines/categories to significantly improve profitability. The focus of this role will be on the Athletics Division, which consist of team sports (Baseball Focus) and fitness categories. Success in this role requires a basic understanding of retail math, strong organizational and computer skills and an entrepreneurial vision to drive category sales as if they were your own. In addition, being exposed to the Open to Buy process working as an assistant buyer or merchandising assistant at another specialty retailer will ease the transition into the department. Achieving developmental success in this role would lead into an Associate Buyer position.

Responsibilities:

  • Review/develop product lines and assortments to achieve budgeted sales and gross margin
  • Own the Ecommerce categories related to the business
  • Negotiate firmly while building strong vendor relationships
  • Maintain accountability for all non-E3 merchandise under buying supervision
  • Work with and direct team to improve performance and achieve professional and business goals
  • Seek and develop new categories, trends, and exclusives
  • Recommend items and vendors for advertising to drive additional sales
  • Negotiate with vendors purchase terms: Cost, payment terms, co-op money, returns/exchanges, freight/terms of delivery, Opportunity buys, etc.
  • Procure and supervise the expenditure of all vendor co-op advertising funds
  • Maintain support documentation
  • Control markdown timeliness and total dollars
  • Work with merchandising teams to create exciting in-store displays and merchandising directives leading to increased sales and profit opportunities including vendor POP, end caps, and overhead displays
  • Collaborate with marketing on photoshoots, promotions and sales
  • Collaborate with Training Department on vendor clinics
  • Ensure vendor compliance with shipping and pricing policies
  • Connect with our consumer through our lifestyle brand
  • Visit stores as needed
  • Manage and execute strategic projects as assigned

    Skills / Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 - 3 years retail experience with progressive responsibilities with 1 year as an assistant buyer or merchandising assistant
  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred
  • Strong mathematics skills (Basic Retail Math); highly analytical; entrepreneurial thinker
  • Familiarity with the Open-To-Buy process a plus
  • Must have strong computer skills, MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Able to manage multiple projects and deadlines efficiently
  • Able to work independently with little supervision
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal & written
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Technical knowledge of related products a plus
  • Experience at retail level preferred
