SUMMARY: Responsible for the direct supervision and completion of duties of the Animal Admissions staff and day to day operations of the Gaines campus Animal Admissions. Responsible for the direct supervision of the admissions staff members and participation in owner present/requested euthanasia program, with general guidance from the Animal Services Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In partnership with the other Animal Services departments maintain and supervise the day to day activities of the Admissions area. Include the following but are not limited to:
In partnership with the other Animal Services departments assure the highest of quality care and husbandry of SDHS animals in accordance with society policies and procedures.
Oversee and complete animal admissions procedures and daily care and husbandry of animals at the Gaines campus in accordance with society policies.
Oversee the Animal Transfer and Transport Program, to include coordinating logistics, working with representatives from other SDHS locations, and driving the Transport Bus and other SDHS vehicles.
Coordinate with the Operations Programs Director to work with representatives from Coalition Partners in transferring animals into the SDHS system.
Responsible for assisting with all aspects of hiring, training, evaluating and terminating, admissions staff in cooperation with Animal Services Manager.
Train all new Admissions Counselors and work side-by-side with staff to assure performance standards and department objectives are met.
Ensure clean, safe and organized environment for the public, staff, volunteers and animals within the society‚s care.
Schedule Animal Admissions staff, including their commitments to Animal Services programs such as behavior assessment and euthanasia.
Assist with development, submission for approval, and implementation of necessary intake & euthanasia procedural changes and oversight of current policies and procedures.
Demonstrate use of proper body mechanics and safety procedures; provide periodic training to Admissions staff and staff from other areas, as assigned.
Strive for and encourage other staff members to maintain excellent physical condition relating to strength, endurance and flexibility to minimize the possibility of work injuries.
Assist Admissions Counselors and volunteers with challenging situations
Responsible for oversight of the Small Pets volunteer program, including training and supervision of volunteers.
Provide assistance on an as needed basis in the Animal Service (AS) Training program
Assist with management and reporting of Animal Service animal related statistics
Participate as a certified handler and observer role in our behavior assessment program for dogs and cats. .
Participate in the internal euthanasia process in accordance with SDHS euthanasia policy and AVMA guidelines. Maintain SDHS euthanasia certification
Assist Animal Services Manager on a regular basis and act as liaison with other department managers and supervisors in appropriate situations.
Provide accurate information to public and ensure that staff act professionally at all times. Assist in resolving customer grievances
Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management and the public at all times.
Responsible for the relinquishment program by assuring the owner‚s needs are met throughout the relinquishment process from initial contact, explanation of process, explanation of Admissions policy, assuring that all admissions counselors abide by SDHS admissions policies and procedures.
Assist with adoptions and animal care when needed.
Wear appropriate, clean uniform or other approved professional attire and nametag at all times during business hours.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee and supervise Gaines Campus admissions staff and small pet volunteers. Assist in overall management of the Gaines Campus Animal Services department, and serve as back up to the Animal Services Manager.
Skills / Requirements
AA degree in related field or completion of sufficient coursework to successfully perform the required duties of the position, and equivalent of three (3) years of full time progressively responsible animal welfare or veterinary related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience working with animals in a kennel, shelter, or veterinary hospital. One year experience as a supervisor required. Advanced training and/or instruction in field of animal care preferred. EBI (Euthanasia By Injection) certification required at time of hire. Must possess excellent people skills as well as organizational skills. Conflict management a plus. Possess the ability to make decisions when necessary in accordance to SDHS policy. Must complete Behavior Assessment Certification provided by SDHS within the first year of employment as well as all three levels of Animal Service training program. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, experience with Microsoft Office and Shelter Buddy software a plus. Must be 21 with a valid CA Drivers License required, have good driving record for previous 5 years.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Individual will frequently be required to stand, walk, sit, to grip and grasp with hands and put fingers together firmly, lift, pull and push, move or restrain animals that weigh 50 pounds, lift, pull and push, move objects that weigh 50 pounds, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, reach and lift overhead up to 30 pounds, talk and hear. On a regular basis, the individual will be required to drive a large vehicle potentially long distances. Important Notes
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Will work within standard office environment, as well as outdoor kennel area with exposure to environmental conditions that include working near and caring for animals. Is potential of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals.
