SUMMARY: Reporting to the Controller, the Accountant will assist the Finance Department to accomplish accounting, reporting, and other strategic financial and organizational goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following, however, other duties may be assigned.
* Implement new fixed asset inventory and maintain fixed asset management and reporting (FAS System)
* Reconcile, analyze and review general ledger accounts and related activities for the production of financial statements and reports
* Assist controller in the month-end and year-end processes
* Assist with annual budget preparation and analysis
* Prepare schedules and documentation in support of external audits
* Prepare and enter adjusting journal entries
* Analyze financial data and budget variances and communicate results to appropriate department management and staff
* Ensure appropriate accounting control procedures
* Assist with preparation and updating of policies and procedures as it relates to the accounting functions throughout the organization
* Participate in cross training and back up support for accounts payable, payroll, cash receipts and other accounting functions as necessary
* Support other department‚s requests for financial information
* Assist with various cost allocations and event administration
* Maintains confidentiality of society records
* Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management and the public at all times.
* Travel to all campuses as needed.
* Participates in Society‚s activities and special events as needed or required.

Skills / Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE: Bachelor‚s Degree in Accounting or related field . Additional qualifying experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education. Requires a solid understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and financial statements. Experience in all aspects of accounting including general ledger analysis and reconciliation of accounts, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, fixed assets and depreciation. Experience in non-profit accounting is desirable. Experience with accounting software and proficiency with MS Office, Excel skills mandatory. Ability to work independently and accurately within tight deadlines. Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the SDHS mission. Valid CA Drivers License and excellent driving record required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Occasional stretching, stooping or bending, grasping and reaching above and below shoulder level and lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 20 pounds. Long periods of sitting, using computer keyboard and monitor, repetitively using hands to operate computers; flexing the neck upward and downward; twisting the neck and the waist. Ability to drive to other locations. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
WORK ENVIORNMENT: Standard office environment, with exposure to environmental conditions that include working near and possibility of caring for animals.
